The other was a piece of junk I picked up for nothing just to have spare parts.yup, busted heel block!Īnyhoo, Matsumoku. But learn to finesse it right and care for it, and they have a really beautiful low-output vibe all their own, totally unlike their lookalike, the Gib 335.įor the record, I owned two of these EA250's, one of which was my first guitar and is still in excellent condition. Couple that with a Bigsby-style trem that could detune a tuning fork, and you had one finicky guitar. In addition, they were known for their very small (but terrifically playable) necks, which didn't prove especially stable at the changes of season. (And bearing almost no resemblance to the fine Epi archtops produced before Gib bought 'em out.) In particular, their true-hollows, like the EA250/5102T, feature woefully under-spec heel blocks that have a nasty habit of coming detached from the body of the guitar. ' used to have this Westone Bendmaster II' the bendmaster is the trem, I believe that is a Spectrum. There were some korean made ones to avoid but overall even some of the korean ones are decent. Their archtops were a radically different story, often being plywood, and not being particularly robust. All the matsumoku westone models are excellent quality guitars as well as matsumoku electra, vantage, aria, univox, etc. The pups have their own vibe that they do very well, but almost all are quite feedback-prone. Finishes basically decent but not quite a match for Gib of the era. I have two, worked on a third for somebody, and IMHO a Matsu solidbody is a great piece of wood.
#WESTONE GUITAR FORUMS PRO#
Matsu's solidbodies are reputed to be pretty good stuff, esp as the brand progressed into the Aria Pro II years.typically considered by many (incl in the luthier biz) to be as good or better than main-market US stuff at the time. I cleaned it up and put some roundwound 12-52, with the fear that the truss rod couldn't keep the tension. The previous owner left it unplayed for some time, and it had very light strings. Tama (drums), some Roland, Cimar, Maxxas, Starfield, Elger (not the toilet maker), tho I don't have much further detail on that operation. It's a 80s Westone Session II made in Matsumoku. Hoshino, in turn, went on to build several other brands, incl. They did the same thing, re-badging their product as Ibanez, Robelli, Hartfeld, and a funny little company called Fender. Interestingly, as Matsumoku basically made guitars on contract for re-branding (but always to Matsu spec), the factory was just blocks from a similar manufacturer.Fuji Gen-Gakki, part of the larger Hoshino Group, IIRC. For instance the Aria 5102T is identical to the Epiphone EA250 apart from a little cosmetic bolt-on badging, as well as thinline archtops in several of the other brands. Most people use videos and pictures for memories,I rely on my chemically induced 'Flashbacks'.Actually, Westone was one of several interchangeable Matsumoku brands, which included Westone, Electra, Aria and Aria Pro II, Vantage, Skylark, some Washburn, some Univox, some Epiphone, and Acoustic. Once stripped I will have to decide a color, please help, Thanx. And this one is no exception, not even a scuff on the headstock, all the hardware is either brass or goldtone. It is in great shape for a 1983, it is a Westone concord III, stock except that someone added Dimarzio hex pickups, great sound and anyone that knows about Matsumoku knows the neck is perfect. I have had this for awhile but I have decided it need the poly taken off and nitro added, this is my strat-kindof guitar, I will keep this also. Built in the now legendary Matsumoko factory in Japan, these instruments offered high quality at an affordable price.
